WebGPU is how browsers talk to modern GPUs. It replaces WebGL, which is based on OpenGL ES—a graphics API from 2007. WebGL was designed for the GPU architecture of flip phones; WebGPU is designed for the AI and gaming workloads of today.
The biggest shift is compute shaders. WebGL only does graphics—triangles, textures, shaders for visual effects. WebGPU can run general-purpose computations on the GPU, like training small neural networks or processing video frames. It’s the difference between a paintbrush (WebGL) and a full workshop with power tools (WebGPU).
WebGPU also maps better to how modern GPUs actually work. Instead of the global state machine that makes WebGL code brittle, WebGPU uses explicit command buffers and pipelines. You describe exactly what you want the GPU to do, then submit it. This reduces CPU overhead and lets browsers validate and optimize your commands ahead of time.
